Wake Up Pune works hard to spread the truth about HIV and AIDS in a city where silence, ignorance, fear and stigma about HIV has already put Pune well above the epidemic mark. HIV myths and misconceptions run rampant in Pune and spread even more rapidly than the virus itself. Breaking down these myths is vital in effectively combating HIV. This battle is never-ending. Today, an interesting forward popped up in our email box. Who knows how many people this email had reached before landing in our mailbox, but, the content was alarming! It was a warning of a so-called plot to infect innocent people by placing HIV infected needles in public places like movie theatres. Wake Up Pune is currently looking into finding the source of these emails. The search however, continues to leave us empty-handed. In fact, these emails are the only sources of such incidences occuring as there have been no news reports of these Pin Prick attacks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and AVERT call these attacks myths, hoaxes or urban legends. Snopes.com, dedicated to uncovering the sources of urban legends, has been tracking this legend for the past seven years and has never found one such case! These emails are false! They do nothing but promote even more fear, ignorance and stigma about HIV. They distance us from the reality of HIV. The reality is that 85% of HIV transmission in India is sexual. If an individual truly wishes to protect him/herself from HIV, then they should engage in HIV preventive behaviours like condom use, rather than avoiding movie theatres. More so, stories like this further demoralize HIV+ people by depicting them as evil villains looking to infect the innocent. This is irresponsible emailing! If you receive this email, delete it and send the facts to those who sent it to you. Let’s spread the truth about HIV instead of spreading more ignorance and fear; a cycle that is fueling the spread of this virus in our city. Join the Fight today!
