The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO)s new Rs 75-crore plan targets to promote condom use by inundating the country with 480 million packs by July 2011.

Three lakh traditional outlets, such as chemists and dispensaries, will continue selling subsidised condoms – socially-marketed condoms starting at Rs 5 for a pack of three – to 80 crore people.

“NACOs condom social marketing programme Phase III will cover 370 districts and 77 per cent of the population, increasing coverage to 370 districts to cover 93 per cent of NACOs programmes with people most at risk of getting infected with HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections,” said K. Chandramouli, director general, NACO, who launched the programme on Monday.

Condoms will now cover 93 per cent of NACOs 1,300 targeted interventions for prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases among people most at risk, such as sex workers.
