Current Programmes
Wake Up Pune is involved in several programmes. These include:
General Public Awareness Campaign
Creative and entertainment based events (e.g. street theatre, kiosks, visual displays and other fun, thought-provoking activities) are utilised to spread the Wake Up Pune message. An exclusive premiere of Raabiya Jayaram's new HIV documentary A Life Less Ordinary (shot in and around Pune) was arranged in August.
Corporate Awareness
A series of four educational and interactive sessions are available to increase awareness about HIV within the corporate sector. Pilot sessions took place at Satyam Computer Services Ltd (courtesy of Satyam Foundation). Employees from Zensar were second to benefit from these sessions. The sessions include:
• Presentation on HIV & AIDS by an expert working in the field
• Interactive session on "Sex and Sexuality"
• Field visit to an NGO that works with people living with HIV
• Feedback and discussion of the way forward
School Awareness
Awareness sessions are taking place at schools throughout Pune. These have proved to be an excellent way to reach young people and educate them about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Wake Up Pune has partnered with the Times of India's NIE programme to run sessions in many of the city's English-medium schools.
Medical and Paramedical Awareness
An effort to educate the medical community in Pune about HIV transmission and treatment to ensure that all medical professionals are equipped with the proper knowledge to effectively promote HIV prevention and treat PLHIV. A three-part session was held in 2007 on 19 August, 26 August and 2 September at Agha Khan Palace.
Taking the Wheel
'Taking the Wheel', sponsored by Eaton Corporation India, is a programme aimed at effective intervention with the truck driver communities in the areas of Wagholi, Shirur and Market Yard. The objectives of this campaign are to:
• Spread HIV awareness and encourage behavior- and attitude- change among the truckers' community
• Develop a relationship of mutual trust and reciprocity with the trucking community to encourage sustainability
• Encourage truck drivers themselves in taking the lead in educating themselves and their communities about HIV through a peer educator-training programme
This will be done by conducting HIV awareness sessions and BCC training at the three truck stop sites, distributing IEC material about HIV and truckers, providing condom education, demonstration and distribution and by providing Voluntary Testing and Counselling Services.
Volunteer Programme
