No sex education please, they are just adolescents
Kolkata, February 4 A 10-member parliamentary committee headed by former BJP chief Venkaiah Naidu is currently visiting city schools to assess the Adolescence Education Programme — sex education as it is euphemistically called — introduced in the state.
From Indian Express.
The study tour ends tomorrow.
But by the end of it, the team has come to the conclusion that scientific education is more important than sex education.
Naidu told The Indian Express that the panel visited three schools yesterday and concluded that more emphasis should be given on life science and the content of the lifestyle education course needs to be altered drastically.
Two schools — Lakshmipat Singhania Academy and Kendriya Vidyalaya, Command Hospital, Alipore — are under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The third, Alipore Multipurpose School, follows the curriculum of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE).
A couple of years ago, the state’s education department had introduced lifestyle education in some of its schools.
But it was not a success.
Various teachers’ organisations are still opposed to it.
In an open interaction session, the members of the panel, teachers, medical bodies, students’ organisations and parents got a chance to express their views on the subject.
Around 20 representatives spoke on the issue. Most were not too keen on the subject.
Secondary Teachers Association general secretary Biswajit Mitra spoke against the implementation of sex education and insisted that health education should be implemented in its place.
“Implementation of sex education at the school level is unwanted and undesirable,” he said.
The teachers’ organisations invited included the All Bengal Teachers Association, the West Bengal Headmasters Association, the West Bengal Teachers Association and a medical organisation, Medical Service Centre.
