2012 HIV Statistics

*In 2012, only 1573 fresh cases have been reported in the state which is an all-time low since 2005.Only 49 HIV deaths and 50 HIV deliveries have been reported from the state this year.

*Kerala has recorded an all-time low in the reporting of fresh HIV cases in 2012. As per the statistics revealed by the Kerala State AIDS Control Society, there has been a 20 percent decline in the reporting of fresh cases this year.

*While HIV/ AIDS is still a social taboo, a number of positive individuals shedding their inhibitions have decided to get hitched despite knowing the risks involved. If the doctors are to be believed, contracting HIV is proving no obstacle for the couples to get married and lead a normal life.

*As many as 6,255 HIV positive cases have been reported in Dakshina Kannada district from 2007 to 2012. While the percentage of HIV positive people in Karnataka is 0.69, Dakshina Kannada has very less cases with 0.3 percent, said zilla panchayat chief executive officer KN Vijayprakash.

*The principal of the MKCG medical college and hospital at Berhampur on Wednesday said steps had been taken for repair of the AIDS test machine lying defunct since August 18 causing problems for a large number of patients. The principal said the National AIDS Control Society had been urged to replace the machine.

*A PIL has been filed in the Orissa high court seeking a direction to the state government to introduce modern method of blood testing for HIV virus in all blood banks replacing the old system that had been found not yielding the desired results. The petitioner cited a recent case of a woman being detected HIV positive six months after she was given blood transfusion.

*Chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda said on Wednesday that number of HIV patients has decreased from 1.5% to 0.7% in Karnataka, but there is need for more sexual awareness.

*Medical education minister S A Ramdas said on Wednesday that soon a rehabilitation center for HIV infected children will be setup in Belgaum.

*In the last three years, 212 inmates from Yerawada central prison have tested positive for HIV.

*As many as 355 inmates from 30 jails in the state tested positive for HIV in 2011, an increase of 120 cases as compared to 2010.

*The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat in a first of its kind initiative in Karnataka through the Backward Classes and Minorities Development Corporation has extended loan facility to three HIV affected persons to help them undertake self-employment. Work of extending government assistance to two more HIV affected persons is underway, KN Vijayprakash, zilla panchayat chief executive officer said here on Thursday.

*Of the two lakh HIV positive cases detected during 2011 in Karnataka, about 68,000 were children.Medical education minister SA Ramdas said. What was shocking was to know that about 5,000 children were orphans and over 3,400 children have single parent.

*These include 4,289 persons who are undergoing treatment at the ART centre and 6,150 persons who are pre-ART patients in Pimpri Chinchwad city.

*There are a total of 10,439 people infected with Human Immuno deficiency Virus(HIV) in Pimpri Chinchwad city.

* New infections have fallen by over 25% between 2001 and 2011

*4 million people living with HIV in 2011 compared to 3.7 million in 2001

*New infections have declined from 370 000 in 2011 to 280 000 in 2012

*250 000 AIDS-related deaths compared to 290 000 in 2005

*A survey of 28000 married women in India found that those who experienced violence in their relationship were 3 x more likely to be HIV positive.
