  • Gates gives another $80m to India’s fight against HIV

    NEW DELHI: India's fight against HIV just got an $80 million push. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) on Thursday increased its funding commitment to Avahan - its initiative to reduce the spread of HIV in India -to $338 million or Rs 1,652 crore.

  • Minister wants ‘separate provision’ for HIV+ school kids

    LATUR: Guardian minister Dileep Deshmukh on Sunday said the administration is thinking of making a separate provision for children affected with AIDS here.

    As reported earlier, 10 children suffering from the disease are staying in the Ashram Sevalaya in the village, run by Amhi Sevak, an organization serving orphans and children inflicted with the disease.

  • Separate schools for HIV/AIDS-infected kids

    IN A strange development, the Guardian Minister in the government of Maharashtra, Dileep Deshmukh, has said that the government is mulling over setting separate schools for HIV/AIDS-infected kids across the state. According to reliable sources, the state government had been compelled to take this unprecedented step owing to the boycott of the school by  parents of 148 children, as the school in question admitted 10 children suffering from HIV/AIDS.

  • UNAIDS welcomes historic decision by Delhi High Court to annul the law that criminalizes adult homosexual relations

    New Delhi, 2 July 2009-The Delhi High Court in India today annulled a 150-year-old law criminalizing "carnal intercourse against the order of nature," commonly known as Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. The court declared that section 377 of Indian Penal Code violted Articles 14, 15, 19 and 21 of the Indian Constitution and said consensual sexual acts of adults in private should not be criminalized. A division bench of Chief Justice A.P Shah and Justice S. Murlidhar said, "The inclusiveness that Indian society traditionally displayed, literally in every aspect of life, is manifest in recognizing a role in society for everyone."

  • New AIDS vaccine ready for trials

    The Canadian University of Western Ontario has developed a new HIV/AIDS vaccine that is ready for human trials.
    The vaccine called SAV001H has been developed by the university at London, about 160 km from here, in collaboration with Sumagen Canada, a subsidiary of the Korean pharmaceutical company.
