“During intercourse the condom broke…”

Dear Sir, I’m unmarried male 30, about one week back I visited brothel. During intercourse the condom broke, I withdrew and used a new condom. The prostitute was looking healthy. If she is HIV +ve then what are my chances of getting infected?

If you stopped intercourse when you realised the condom had broken and put on a new condom chances of HIV transmission are minimal. HIV can only be contracted if infected bodily fluids (only blood, semen, vaginal fluids or breastmilk) enter the blood stream. This means there must be a window into the blood stream, ie. a cut, scrape, lesion; for the infected fluid to enter.

Many people living with HIV look just like you or me, just because a person has HIV does not mean they are unhealthy. Without asking her there is no way for you to know if the sex worker is HIV positive.

If you are concerned and would like to talk to someone or get tested the testing centre at Deep Griha Society, 13 Tadiwala Road, does HIV tests for Rs150 and offers free and confidential pre and post test counselling.

All the best
